Founded in 1993 at the time of the First Ornithological Congress in Costa Rica, THE ORNITHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION OF COSTA RICA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the study, research and conservation of bird life and its habitat, in order to orient public and private policies. Among the priorities of the OACR is to educate the general public about the more than 850 species of birds found in Costa Rica. In 1999, our Association was declared to be “in the public interest” by the government of Costa Rica.

Among its principal activities are:

  • A monthly program on ornithological themes.
  • A monthly bird watching tour.
  • The biannual magazine Zeledonia.
  • An internet site: www.zeledonia.org

Research projects that receive support from the ASSOCIATION are:

  • Determination of Important Bird Areas.
  • Collection of Costa Rican bird calls.
  • Licentiate and Masters degree thesis research in zoology and biology.

Among the members of the ORNITHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION OF COSTA RICA are ornithologists and biologists, professionals in many disciplines, students, photographers, tour guides, environmentalists and birdwatchers in general, all united by their passion for ornithology.

The ASSOCIATION recognizes as an especially prominent member Dr. Alexander Skutch, founder and honorary president, for his lifelong dedication to the study and conservation of neotropical avifauna, especially that of Costa Rica.
